Commentary, cause I want to:
Goddamn, I love Slide Away that much. And surprise surprise, Wonderwall is not their best song. And, big shocker, 6/10 are from Definitely Maybe/Morning Glory, their two best albums. 7 if you count Whatever, which came out between the two. And only one song from 2000s Oasis (which I like, but not as much).
Fuck it, let’s do albums too.
8. Dig Out Your Soul
7. Standing On The Shoulder of Giants
6. The Masterplan
5. Don’t Believe The Truth
4. Heathen Chemistry
3. Be Here Now
2. (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?
1. Definitely Maybe
Commentary:
Again, shocking, Morning Glory isn’t #1. Both Morning Glory and Def. Maybe have fucking killer songs on each (Slide Away, Live Forever, Married With Children, Cigarettes and Alcohol vs. Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back In Anger, Cast No Shadow, Champagne Supernova), they both also have their weak points (Bring It On Down and Up In The Sky vs. The Swamp Song(s) and Hello). Definitely Maybe wins in the middle tier though: Rock n’ Roll Star, Shakermaker, Supersonic, and Digsy’s Dinner vs. Roll With It, Hey Now!, She’s Electric, Morning Glory. Definitely Maybe cleans up there.
Now, in the non-Def. Maybe/Morning Glory category, I have Be Here Now first. Be Here Now gets some flack for not being the great Britpop triumph, but it’s pretty good. Don’t Go Away is one of my favorite Oasis songs, and one where Liam really fucking nails the vocals. I can see where people say it’s “bloated” and “overdone,” but most of it’s pretty good. All Around The World is excellent, and I Hope, I Think, I Know is catchy as hell. The rest of the album could probably be cut down.
And then there’s a big drop off. I like 2000s Oasis, but they’re just not as good, unfortunately. Heathen Chemistry gets the top 2000s nod. It’s a solid album; Stop Crying Your Heart Out is great, Little By Little is good, Songbird is surprisingly catchy, She Is Love is pretty good too. Aside from those, the album is kind of meh.
Next is Don’t Believe The Truth. Again, solid, but not great. Mucky Fingers has a nice, simple guitar riff which is fun. I won’t lie; Lyla is fairly excellent, but falls short of their older stuff. Let There Be Love and The Importance of Being Idle are good songs as well. Liam makes some decent songwriting contributions with Guess God Thinks I’m Abel (which I find HILARIOUS because of the biblical reference and his…interesting relationship with Noel) and Love Like A Bomb.
The Masterplan is next on the list. Now, The Masterplan is not “technically” a studio album by Oasis; it’s just a collection of B-Sides. BUT holy shit, are those B-Sides excellent. The Masterplan, Acquiesce, Talk Tonight, Rockin’ Chair, and Half The World Away are probably better than any song on the next two albums I’ll talk about. Also, Listen Up, Going Nowhere, and Fade Away are good too.
And here come the lesser albums.
First is Standing On The Shoulder of Giants. Now I’ve recently started appreciating this album, so now it’s a solid 7th. Most of the songs on the album are decent (this is Oasis, after all), but none of them are very good. Go Let It Out and Sunday Morning Call are both decent. Funnily enough, I like the B-Side to the Sunday Morning Call single, Carry Us All, better than any song on the album.
And that brings us to Dig Out Your Soul. I just don’t like it all that much. Bag It Up and I’m Outta Time are ok, and The Shock of the Lightning is ok, even if it does seem like they’re trying too hard. I’m just not a fan.
